An Interesting Time to Ask Questions

The other day, my friend asked me why I was always such a rebel. We had been discussing the pandemic and I was sharing different ideas that I was thinking about. She asked me why I questioned everything. Why couldn’t I just accept what I was being told as truth? I didn’t have an answer for her right away. A few days ago, I watched the documentary about David Bohm, a quantum physicist who worked with incredible minds like Einstein, Oppenheimer and many of the founding fathers of physics. One of the things that really stood out for me [...]

Do Beauty Filters Make Us Feel Ugly?

Using a filter to make ourselves look more beautiful seems like a fun thing to do. We get to look more like a model. We get to see a kind of “perfect” version of ourselves. It seems like fun. But what if it’s actually sending us unconscious messages that we aren’t good enough? Or that we are actually ugly? What if these seemingly innocent filters are actually causing more damage than good? Did She Get Plastic Surgery? I was sitting a friend’s house the other day who doesn’t use social media and doesn’t know much about smartphone technology. She [...]

The Importance of Crying

Who knew that crying was such an important part of our mental and emotional health? Crying has often been treated like a bad thing, a sign that we are weak and unable to handle life… when in fact, it is the total opposite. The ability to cry shows that we are safe enough in the world to let go and be totally honest with ourselves. It’s knowing that when the tears stop flowing, everything will be so much better. Honesty Sadness is a real thing. Anger is a real thing. Disappointment is a real thing. But we’ve been taught [...]

How to Surrender to Manifest our Desires

We know how the power of intention works. We focus on a particular desire or intention long enough and it will manifest. There are many versions of how this works but the premise is the same. This is something that we like to believe in because it gives us a sense of the power that we have in our lives. The part of this process we know less about is the importance of surrender. This is a much scarier idea. Many of us have real discomfort with the idea of letting go of control, disengaging our clever, cynical or [...]

I Truly Pray for Guidance

I spent some time with a good friend recently who was struggling with some issues in his life. We chatted about philosophy. We chatted about interesting ways to see the solution he desired. We pondered what love would do. We tried to look at all the possible solutions to see what is the best one. But in the end, I had to admit to him that although I do go through these thought processes, eventually, I rely on prayer/guidance to make my decision. It’s scary to admit, because for some reason, someone relying on prayer can be seen to [...]

A Meditation to Clear Your Mind

It may sound crazy, but we are going to let Bob Newhart help us to clear our mind in meditation. I am sharing a clip from his TV-show "Newhart" that, strangely enough, will help us get rid of all the drama, chatter, and unnecessary information that is constantly taking us out of the present moment, exhausting us, and keeping us from the peace that is right inside all of the time. It is a meditation called "Neti-Neti". Neti-neti is a sanskrit phrase that means "not this, not that". To use it in meditation is to sit quietly breathing and whenever [...]

Staying Out of the Long Grass of Life

Sometimes there are things that we just simply need to say “No” to, yet we choose to do it anyway. In the heat of the moment, we decide that the thrill is worth whatever the consequences are (of course, we aren’t thinking about the consequences at all in that moment). Afterwards we wonder why we did it again… especially since we actually knew the consequences before we started… Why do we repeatedly do things that go against our internal wisdom? Hmmm…  A few weekends ago, I went to a Buddhist meditation retreat. On the first night, our teacher explained [...]

Finding Your Centre – How do YOU hear guidance?

My sister and I were chatting about our mom this morning. She did so much good work in the world, was so loving and kind and affected so many people in wonderful ways, we wondered how she "heard guidance", centred herself and knew what her life purpose was. Today, we actually discuss these kinds of things intellectually. We learn "grounding exercises" and meditations to bring us to centre. But of course, my mom was born in 1939. There weren't these kinds of discussions. I'm not sure that these phrases had even been invented yet. What came into my mind [...]

There Is No Path – A Poem

I would like to share a poem with you that came to me while in Cuba last week. I describe the experience in the video below of hearing this poem while walking in a rainstorm along the beach... asking God the question, "Have I taken a wrong turn somewhere?"...  We often talk about "being on a journey"... which is true. But this leads us to wonder if we might have taken a wrong turn somewhere, especially when life seems to not be what we want it to be in the present moment. I hope you enjoy my video. You [...]

Seeds of Eternal Youth

This morning, I picked up some acorns on my walk this morning - seeds of new life. I am re-reading a series of books that I feel are becoming relevant again called "The Life and Teaching of the Masters of the Far East" by Baird T. Spalding. Here is what they say about eternal youth: "Behold the leaves and the buds at the tips of the oldest banyan - how young they are - young as the seed from which the giant sprang into life. The life reactions of plant and man being alike, man can certainly profit [...]

Meditation for Compassion

This morning, as I sat in the café that my daughter works in, I listened to my mind as I sat watching the people walk by. Her café is right downtown and so there are all kinds of "characters", drug-addicts and homeless people. As kind and gentle as I think I am, I was amazed to listen to the constant "assessments" of each person that I was thinking. Hmm... Pink pants and bright green shirt. He's not wearing a shirt and he has his hair in a bun on top of his head. Oh, he's in a wheelchair, poor [...]

The Perfect Question to Ask God

So, let's say you have 20 minutes with your favourite spiritual teacher, guru or God. What would you ask them? We often think that we are supposed to ask some great philosophical question that will change the course of our lives. But this isn't true. There are stories about people travelling to the remotest places to find the wise man who can help them find their answers. When they arrive, they ask some grand philosophical question and of course the answer is just as grand, and simple, and not at all the answer that they were looking for. Because [...]

Wisdom Beyond the Veil

Behind all of these teachings there is something that lies "beyond the veil". For all of the years that I have taught yoga, meditation, spirituality, tantra, etc I have always struggled with talking about the concept of God or spirit into my teachings. Mostly because I didn't want the words to offend anyone. I didn't want anyone to turn away because of it. And this is because I believe that if discussing this topic separates us, then we aren't discussing it correctly. Because we are all the same. We all have flesh and we all are energy as well. It [...]

The Beauty of Mathematics & Tantra

What does Tantra, the philosophy of love, intimacy & Divine Connection, have to do with Mathematics? Everything... And this is why when we discover tantra, our lives start to fit together like a beautiful puzzle... because the building blocks for an amazing edifice is within us... we just have to know how to put them together. Mathematician Turned Tantrika? Long before I was a tantrika, I was once a mathematician. I spent 5 years at the University of Waterloo studying every kind of mathematics from pure math, statistics, calculus, algebra, computer science, etc... eventually receiving a degree in Combinatorics [...]
